WHAT IS ANSI?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the U.S. voluntary standards and conformity assessment system. ANSI works to help develop and maintain standards for many different industries, helping to keep workers safe while on the job.
Some especially important ANSI standards are the personal protective equipment (PPE) standards that define the level of protective gear that workers across different industries and environments need.
The High Visibility Safety Apparel (HVSA) standards were first introduced in 1999. They were expanded again in 2008/2009 to include the "Class" nomenclature: Class 1, 2, 3. The standard was revised again in 2015 to include the "Type" nomenclature: Type O, R, P.
WHAT PERFORMANCE CLASSES AND TYPES DO WE OFFER?
-
Class 2
Shop Class 2 GearA higher level of ANSI protection and the lowest level that can be designated Type R or Type P. Gear with this class rating requires additional reflective and fluorescent material in order to be seen in slightly more dangerous environments, such as roadwork alongside a busy street. ANSIÂ Class 2 apparel is suitable for workers who are on roadways with traffic up to 50 mph.
-
Class 3
Shop Class 3 GearThe highest level of ANSI protection, which can be either Type R or Type P. Typically used for jobs with the highest danger of struck-by accidents, such as highway construction workers, site inspectors, emergency responders, railway workers, and utility crews. Class 3 apparel therefore requires more reflective and fluorescent material and may be bulkier than a Class 2 garment. ANSI Class 3 apparel is suitable for workers who are on roadways with traffic over 50 mph and/or where there is inclement weather that limits visibility.

VisWERX® offers Type R gear
For applications with high exposure to traffic, such as roadway work and temporary traffic control zones. Type R garments can be rated as Class 2 or Class 3. Our Type R gear is also sufficient for Type O applications (where there is no direct exposure to roadways or traffic over 25 mph).
While we don't carry Class 1-specific gear, VisWERX® ANSI Class 2 and ANSI Class 3 gear are sufficient for Class 1 applications.
